Do you go to the bathroom to pee right before leaving the house, or before a work meeting, or prior to exercising? We call this “just in case” peeing.
This may be something you’ve done forever, but this is actually a bad habit for your bladder health.
One of the major contributors to urinary frequency is going to the bathroom “just in case”.
How "just in case" peeing can contribute to urinary frequency
Trying to void when your bladder is not full can result in confusing the connection of the brain and bladder. If you are regularly emptying your bladder when it is only partially full, it will train your bladder to give you the signal/urge to go when it reaches that partially full level.
This results in frequent urination since you feel you need to pee when your bladder only has a small amount of urine in it.
How often should you urinate?
Ideally, you should be urinating every 2-4 hours during waking hours. If you find yourself going to the bathroom more frequently than this, we would recommend seeking out a pelvic floor physical therapist to help!
How pelvic floor physical therapy can improve urinary frequency
Pelvic physical therapy can help to improve your urinary frequency by working on:
Techniques to delay urgency
Optimizing pelvic floor muscle function
Daily fluid intake/proper hydration
Avoiding bladder irritants such as caffeine, acidic foods/drinks, carbonated beverages
